This is a truly rare piece of photo history. James modified this Mentor 3x4 camera to accept only polaroid film.

He also mounted a Dallmeyer Pentac 8in f/2.9 lens on the front. This is a large format SLR. Meaning, you see through this massive lens by looking down through the hood. It is a contemporary of the more well known Graflex Series D.

This particular camera allows for lens tilt, and it still works in one axis, front to back. I've tried to illustrate this in the photos. The knob to turn the lens around the y axis, or left and right, is no longer connected. The idea was to shoot with Type 665 film, which is a polaroid film that gives both a positive and a negative.

I have only 5 packs left, they are included. They are also expired, but my guess would be that they will still work just fine. If you look closely at the photos you will see where James glued parts together, and smeared black silicone to seal the inside from light leaks. This camera is emblematic of his style, a messy, hands on labor of love. Photography is no longer like this, it has moved on to something very different. I'm hoping there is an individual our there that will appreciate this camera, what it represents, and maybe even put it to use again. It has been carefully tucked away for over a decade.

I traveled with this camera through Nepal and Southeast Asia. Later, I made platinum/palladium prints with type 665 negatives. I've included a couple in the photos for this listing to show what kind of image this camera produces. The camera bag, and 5 packs of polaroid film are included.

The tripod is not included. The item "Mentor 3x4 Polaroid Camera Modified Very Rare" is in sale since Wednesday, August 28, 2019.
